After the baseball game at Cheney Stadium, Whitney and I decided to take in a few more sights around Tacoma including the Point Defiance Rose Garden and Five Mile Drive. Let’s stop and smell the roses.

Tacoma Rose Garden

The rose garden is the focal point of Point Defiance Park and has more than an acre of rose gardens, the oldest of which was established in 1895. The site includes a garden of miniature roses, arbors of climbing roses, a picturesque wishing well and quaint gazebos.

There are many other gardens nearby featuring all sorts of flowers, like this spiny example that I’ve never seen before.

The iris garden was past it’s prime but there were a few hardy souls enjoying the last few days of May.

The expansive lawn and gazebo are a hotspot for local weddings.

When taking a trip to Tacoma, most people will head straight for the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. But I say take a minute on your way into the area and appreciate the simply gifts a quiet walk through a garden can provide. Plus, it’s free so that’s a pretty great return on investment.
